Cultural Heritage in Western Australia: New Perspectives

Prof. Peter Veth

University of Western Australia

This lecture will examine past and present regimes for protecting cultural heritage in WA and
the ‘cycle’ of the WA Aboriginal Heritage Act. It will look at the need to protect complex
intangible and tangible values and I make some personal observations about past conflicts. I
will critique the newly proposed legislation and discuss the need for increased investment in
heritage beyond compliance.

I will provide real life examples of heritage challenges and opportunities from the Western
Desert, Pilbara and Kimberley regions of Australia
